An Exploration of the Complexities of Human Identity

Illustration ★ Publication

Illustrate, design, and print a publication exploring human identity, including, but not limited to, age, gender, relationships, and self actualization.

Objective

First things first, gathering content. A large portion of this publication is a series of interviews with ten different individuals, from ages 7 to 94. I developed questions, conducted and transcribed the interviews before designing and illustrating them. The book also includes essay, poems and a myriad of visual elements.

The Process

Part of the identity of this publication is in the two color printing process, identity is also developed in consistent type choices and illustrative style.

Hand Lettering

The final part of the process was printing. I used this super cool technique called Risograph printing. If you don’t know this technique, it’s often referred to as digital screen printing. Each page design is split into separate files according to the color of its content. The riso machine burns this image into rice paper on an ink drum as a master copy. The machine then pushes soy based ink through this master onto the paper!

The final product was 56 lovingly designed pages, perfect bound and editioned. Holding the finished book in my hands truly felt like a culmination of my entire education at Texas State University. So many of my classes are represented, typography, comics and zines, risography, art direction, figure drawing, and more. But enough of my sentimentality, photos of the finished product.
